DESPERATION BURNS: THE ART OF PURPLE
Featuring original paintings, drawings, and prints from Marald Van Haasteren and John Dyer Baizley.
John Dyer Baizley (Philadelphia) brings longtime friend Marald van Haasteren (Leiden, The Netherlands) for his first US exhibit after their relentless collaborative work on the images and packaging artwork for Baizley's rock group Baroness’ highly anticipated new album "Purple." Desperation Burns will focus largely on the artwork the two created for "Purple" and will also feature brand new paintings as well as limited edition screenprinted art prints produced by Minneapolis creative studio Burlesque of North America.
Both Marald and John will be in the Burlesque studio in the week leading up to the event, creating brand new work and planning a few surprises to be announced along the way. The two have worked in parallel over the past decade or more, creating album artwork and posters within and around the punk / hardcore community, and this exhibit will be the first the two have worked on together.
ABOUT MARALD VAN HAASTEREN
Marald van Haasteren was born in Leiden, the Netherlands in 1970. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague in 1995. He has been making art for the DIY and underground music scene since 1989...bands he worked for include: State of Fear, Wolfbrigade, Boltthrower, Kylesa, High on Fire.
His techniques range from black and white ink work to full color paintings. He uses digital media to boost his images but the basis is always hand drawn work. This is the first time in 15 years that Marald will properly exhibit his work.

ABOUT JOHN DYER BAIZLEY
John Dyer Baizley resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After studying for 3 years at Rhode Island School of Design he became disenchanted and school left for rural Virginia. There he formed the metal band Baroness and kickstarted his art career, focusing largely on album artwork and posters.
His passion for art history and classical mythology shine through in his drawings and paintings, often working from live models and incorporating his own myths and archetypes.

CO Exhibitions presents Strange Girls Never Die
The concept of Strange Girls Never Die first came into being during show's curator, Rhys Jones, study term of banner painting at the Coney Island Sideshow School. The term "strange girls" has a history of use in circus sideshows as an umbrella term to describe tattooed ladies, bearded ladies, fat ladies, lobster girls, and other girls like them. One banner that's stuck with her through a lifelong obsession with freakshows asks: "Strange Girls: Can they marry like other girls? Have children? Be as happy as they are? Why were they born?" With the bulleted callout..."ALIVE!"
Strange Girls Never Die is a love letter, a Dear John, a manifesto, and a diary. It is an exploration and exaltation of strange girls and the myriad of ways we manifest, perform, and live this identity. Marrying the boundless potentials of gender identity and expression with the equally boundless possibilities of strangeness, this art show investigates both. Strange Girls spits in the face of tired notions of gender roles and expressions and puts on a pedestal self-determination, creation, and deviation.
The exhibit features an eclectic mix of paintings, illustrations, photography, prints, and sculpture in beauty and oddity.

CO Exhibitions presents Jacob Bannon'sFragments
A solo exhibition featuring mixed media originals and one of a kind screenprints.
Jacob Bannon of acclaimed punk rock and hardcore fame is showing his personal works in a solo show Fragmentsat Co Exhibitions gallery. He has been working in collaboration with Burlesque on one of a kind prints The Year of the Hare
based on his album cover work for Fucked Up. He will also premiere original works.
He is quoted: My most ambitious collaboration with Burlesque of North America to date. Taking inspiration from the chaotic nature of Fucked Up's
Year of the Hare
release on Deathwish. We printed my mixed media illustration in a high gloss black UV ink over one of a kind backgrounds. These kinetic backgrounds were created using test prints and factory seconds combined with floods of translucent and neon inks, spray bottles, splatters, dry-brushing, and other experimentation. This process made EVERY print 100% unique, pushing the limits of printmaking to a new level.
Jacob Bannon is a man of prolific projects and endeavours. At 14 years old he started the band Converge and went on to begin Deathwish record label in 2001. He has worked relentlessly in defining hardcore’s visuals through his label and various albums. As for his fine art, Jacob Bannon was encouraged by Matin Geramita (long time manager of Derek Hess) to start producing archival prints. He continues to push boundaries in all directions.

CINCO DE MAYHEM
CO Exhibitions is hosting the third annual celebration and annihilation of pinatas designed by Twin Cities artists. At our first two events, we displayed and destroyed over two dozen cardboard and papier-mache creations in the shapes of DeLoreans, emojis, video game characters, diamonds, birds, seals, owls, raccoons, aardvarks, pirate ships, and beyond. Gallery visitors purchased tickets for the rights to smash the pinatas, leaving hundreds of local art lovers of all ages with huge smiles on their faces and leaving our gallery floors completely covered in a multi-colored mess of confetti, streamers, candy wrappers, and shredded paper.
GIVING BACK
Between 2013 and 2014's Cinco De Mayhem events, we raised enough money through tickets sales to donate over $1200 to local charities including Second Harvest Heartland, Free Arts MN, and The Ann Bancroft Foundation. This year, we are asking pinata enthusiasts to donate non-perishable food items which we will donate to Second Harvest Heartland along with proceeds from ticket sales throughout the night.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Upon entering the gallery, visitors will be automatically entered into a raffle. Beginning at 7pm, names will be pulled from the raffle box to determine who will be smashing each pinata. Additional raffle tickets may be purchased throughout the night. From 6-7pm, gallery visitors will have the chance to bid on pinatas. Winning bidders will earn exclusive rights to smash the pinata(s) of their choosing. Prizes from our sponsors will also be given away throughout the night.
Video projections, an Instagram feed wall, and real-time instant replays of the smash action will all be provided by Minneapolis video artists Yatta, making Cinco de Mayhem a truly vivid experience.

Kevin O'Meara and Kevin Horn, two Twin Cities photographers construct a dialogue by documenting the streets in two different cities in tandem.
With a self-assigned list of 50 verbal prompts, each photographer set out to take 50 photos in two different cultural meccas: Kevin O Meara captured San Francisco at night and Kevin Horn photographed New Orleans in the day. The only shared results were the expectations of one week to shoot and unsolicited physical altercations.
These 100 photographs will be shown and available for purchase singularly or in double right-handed 8 x 10" book form with a limited edition of 100. Each spread of the book presents each artist's photographic take on each of the 50 prompts: one daytime photo paired with one nighttime photo.
Each spread reflects the stark difference of context while still working in the narrative that each photographer found.

Opening Saturday, June 30. 6:00pm until 10:00pm
Join CO Exhibitions on Saturday, June 30th from 6-10pm for a one-night-only extravaganza that salutes the memory, the passion, the insanity, the art, and the rock n' roll of St. Paul's iconic and long-defunct Speedboat Gallery.
This special night will include work on display from former SBG artists that are now well established including Bruce Tapola, Alexa Horochowski, Scott Dolan, Frank Gaard, Sean Smuda, and more. In true Speedboat spirit, an additional selection of young artists that are ready to take on the world will be featured, including Laura Bennet, Katelyn Farstad, Adam Callier, Oakley Tapola and Sophie Wiel. Also on display will be photos and materials from the Speedboat heyday. Live music featuring SBG founder Paul Dickinson's post-punk band, Frances Gumm, plus more to be announced.
HISTORY
Speedboat was a cutting edge gallery that was existed at 1166 Selby Avenue from 1988 until the St. Paul Police and Fire Department shut it down in 1994. During that time, Speedboat took chances on hundreds of visual artists, showing everyone from Frank Gaard to Richard Lack. To the naked eye, the space was a store front art gallery, but after dark, the basement transformed into an underground music club.
As an all ages rock venue, Speedboat hosted bands from all over the world including Green Day, Bikini Kill, Jawbox, No Means No, The Damn Builders, The Grifters, Arcwelder, The Cows, Walt Mink, Hammerhead, and many more. Speedboat was also an incubator for local, up and coming musicians who either warmed up for the national acts, played their own shows, or got to watch rock happen as it was meant to beÃÆ’¢â‚¬â€ÂÂÂÂÂin a soothingly dark basement full of angst and cigarette smoke.
Exhibitions from Speedboat were reviewed in Artforum and Art in America. As a music venue it was written up in Billboard and Details. Although its contributions to the creative community were vast, Speedboat received no grants that are commonly afforded to many alternative exhibition spaces. The gallery was forced to survive and innovate with low cover charges and art sales. Motor Oil Coffee shop was part of the Speedboat Compound as well, it offered 50 cent Coffee and a connecting doorway, which made it possible for anyone to stop in to check out the art until midnight every night.

Opening Saturday April 21st
Local art expatriate, Isaac Arvold, returns from Brooklyn, NY to Minneapolis for a heartfelt exhibit featuring large-scale works based on three years worth of lost art, fizzled relationships, on the road reflections, and life lessons.
Earlier this year, Arvold lost a three year body of illustrative work in the blink of an eye. While rushing to get into a car on the way to the dog run in Brooklyn, he misplaced a bag which held his prized drawing notebooks. And though he returned to the scene minutes later, the bag (and the notebooks) were sadly gone without a trace.
Luckily, Arvold had been wise enough to photograph and scan the majority of these illustrations, which followed his experiences on tour with the Rhymesayers family, through failed relationships, and the beginnings of his new life in New York City. In "Second Hand Emotion" Arvold will re-imagine this lost body of work through a variety of mediums and collaborations.
The exhibit will feature 48 original mixed media paintings on 12x24 and 24x36 inch panels--recreations of the illustrations from Arvold's lost notebooks--presented together as large murals. Each panel represents a semblance of a whole; collective pieces of the artist's memories are reflected on and rebuilt, bit by bit. Additional large-scale paintings and illustrations will also be featured in the exhibit, as well as select collaborations with performers, filmmakers, and other creatives.
HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN:
Arvold has a current Kickstarter campaign to help fund art supplies to complete the work, transportation of work to Minneapolis, and capturing and editing of the entire project by filmmaker Maria Juranic. A number of incentives, such as custom paintings, illustrations, and memorabilia are up for grabs for those who pledge support. Watch the video and donate to the project here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/artisbad/second-hand-emotion

ABOUT ISAAC ARVOLD
Isaac Arvold was born 1979 in the woods of Minnesota. He lived in a house his father built, sharing pencils, nails and knives with his three siblings. In 2002, Isaac received a bachelor’s degree in Education, after which he moved to Minneapolis. It was within the Mill City that he stumbled upon an unexpected, yet thriving, art community as well as great friends and collaborators that propelled his work as an artist. Isaac has shown his paintings in numerous locations in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area – from local cafes and independent galleries to private exhibitions within "fancy art" and advertising agencies. As his studio art developed, so did his desire to leave a different kind of mark. Starting in 2004, Isaac created multiple murals collaborating with the likes of Eric Inkala, Drew Peterson, and Broken Crow, all close friends.
It was 2007 when Isaac quit teaching and started to pursue art full time, and the devotion produced numerous shows, such as Will Work for Food 2, Almost Famous, Almost Homeless, and many others. During this time, Isaac found work in another creative arena, traveling the lower 48 with the Rhymesayers Record Label crew. For four years, he brought his sketchbooks and imagination with him. Isaac’s time on the road with a touring band forced another evolution within his work medium, and he began to create multimedia pieces along the way. In 2010, Isaac’s photographs and concepts were the sole creative element for Atmosphere’s “Best Day†music video.
By 2010, Arvold excelled in three things – painting canvases, creating large scale murals, and capturing moments between friends in his photography. There was nothing left but to move to Brooklyn, New York, especially given his disposition to pay higher rent and be closer to Coney Island. During Isaac’s time in New York, he has displayed work in Macy's Herald Square windows – one of the most densely occupied area of the city, and continues to develop his craft. He stayed connected to his Minnesota roots by working with Nice Ride MN launch.

November 19th - December 16th
Join CO Exhibitions on Saturday, November 19th for Rien Comme Les Autres, featuring work from renowned Montreal graffiti and design collective, 123Klan. The group will be showcasing recent art and design work as well as painting a large-scale mural within CO's 2600sq foot gallery space.
Originally from France, 123Klan is a graffiti collective founded in 1992 by husband and wife duo, Scien & Mrs Klor, alongside members Dean, Sper, Skam and Reso. Inspired by the works of Neville Brody in the mid '90s, the pair found creative ways to mix graffiti and graphic design to convey their personal style through digital media, using a Performa Mac. With what was a logical attempt to transmit their passion via new mediums, 123Klan gave birth to a brand new movement. The current format of 123Klan appeared in 2003 when founders Scien and Klor decided to create their own design studio in order to fulfill the requests of their many clients. In 2007, the studio opened its doors in Montreal.
The 123Klan team specializes in branding and in the creation of logos, character design, art direction, and new strategies, in addition to their first love: graffiti. At the same time, 123Klan launched their in-house brand BANDIT-1$M, which they use as their laboratory. Trends are created, tested and launched on the market in a matter of weeks, constantly updating their expertise on the street culture market.
123Klan's client roster includes: Adidas, Playstation, Microsoft, Sony, Coca Cola, Nike, Pepsi, Wired, ZooYork, Mini Cooper, Lamborghini, and many more.

Join CO Exhibitions for Things You Carry, a new body of work from artist Vincent Stall (King Mini, PUNY)
"The world keeps spinning, continents grind, boulders turn to pebbles, turn to sand, turn to dust. One, Two, Three, Five. Five. Really, Five, the voodoo around his neck leaves a mark on his breast bone, is it bone? or cartilage he can't seem to remember. He sits, waits and listen for the hum of the saw, the smell of burnt wood. This is Canyon Land."
In Things You Carry, Stall will create the living world of Canyon Land, a desolate place where King Mini reigns supreme. Complete with installations that recreate scenes from Stall's narrative-driven comic art, CO Exhibitions will be transformed into a playground of dark humor and intricate illustration work. A new book of the same name, published by 2D Cloud, will be a companion piece to the exhibit.
ABOUT VINCENT STALL
StallÃÆ’¢â‚¬â„¢s true roots trace back to founding King Mini International, a boutique design house, where he spent several years ÃÆ’¢â‚¬Å“figuring it all outÃÆ’¢â‚¬ÂÂÂÂÂÂ. In addition to publishing numerous books, including the much loved Robot Investigator, the much misunderstood Everyone Takes a Turn, as well as Passenger Side and Jetsam. Stall's work also graces the walls of music venues and transit kiosks in the form of rock and roll posters. Under the name King Mini, his illustration work has appeared in such comic and rock poster books as Sonic: Visuals of Music, MeatHaus, Rossetta, and Beast.
After several stints as a visiting artist at Miami Ad School and Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Stall co-founded PUNY, an interactive entertainment studio, in 2007. Within months of opening their doors, PUNY's studios began work on animated pilots for Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, and Fox Network. Stall has since gone on to design and direct shorts for the award winning children's show Yo Gabba Gabba; videos for Robert Schneider of Apples in Stereo; and the title sequence and effects for James Gunn's Super.
Stall has also made a name for himself in foodie circles by designing the signage, menus, and custom table tops for award winning restaurants on his home turf in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As Gastro Non Grata founder Craig Drehmel states, ÃÆ’¢â‚¬Å“Vincent is just one talented mother fucker.ÃÆ’¢â‚¬ÂÂÂÂÂÂ

TRUST ME! is a collaborative project based on the ideas of relationships, ownership, process and appropriation. Artist and designer Adam R. Garcia asked a number of his creative colleagues to submit a one-color image to be artistically manipulated by Garcia—sight unseen until the opening reception. Due to the disparate imagery, a color scheme and loose theme based on trust and deception ended up forming within the creative process. The final execution is a collection of 12" x 16" prints in three colors, each a "collaboration" between Garcia and the original creator. A didactic piece containing the original art and the final idea will accompany the pieces as an insight into the process.
Local and national contributors include:
Mike Perry, Justin Thomas Kay, Aesthetic Apparatus, Mr. Kiji, Mike Davis, Justin Elias, Kate Bingaman-Burt, Mikey Burton, Eric Carlson, Michael Gaughan, Booka B, Lonny Hurley, Colin Strandberg, Sara Lintner, Ben LaFond, Greg Hubacek, Milton Un, Bryan Haker, The Love Movement, OBLVN, Brad Ogbonna, Lloyd Winter, Neuarmy, Eric Inkala, Keith Williams, Keegan Wenkman, Ted Quinn, Anton Pearson & Always Reigning
TRUST ME! Opens Saturday, July 9th with a reception from 7-10pm and runs through August 6th.

The Best and Worst of Frank Gaard will span over four decades of work by the artist, including selections from Gaard's time as founder and editor of famed underground art zine, Artpolice; a number of pieces from his ongoing portrait series; large-scale works that haven't been exhibited in decades; installation art of various mediums; recent collaborative works created by Gaard and his wife Pamela and more. A short documentary film will be screened, featuring a studio visit and interview between Gaard and art scene/news vet (and owner of four Gaard pieces), Robyne Robinson.
Gaard has been an incredibly influential figure in the Twin Cities art scene since the mid-seventies. His signature brand of salacious neon pop art has alternately shocked and delighted viewers both near and far, and Gaard's ongoing portrait series of friends, family and art world fixtures spans time and legacy—a local history book made visual. With distinctive, recognizable style and searing color palettes, Gaard's work plays off elements of dark humor, tongue-in-cheek bawdiness, and bold statement—both political and social.
Born in Chicago in 1944, Gaard earned his B.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1967 and his M.F.A. from the California College of Arts & Crafts in 1968. He finally settled in Minneapolis, holding the position of professor of Fine Arts at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design from 1969-1987. Gaard's work has been shown locally, nationally, and internationally and is held in the permanent collections of the Walker Art Center, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and The Art Institute of Chicago and archived at MoMA and the Smithsonian.
The Best and Worst of Frank Gaard opens on Saturday, May 7th, 2011 from 6 pm to 10 pm and runs through May 28th. Regular Gallery Hours are Monday-Friday Noon to 5 p.m. and by appointment. The exhibit will also be open extended hours during Art-A-Whirl Weekend: Friday, May 20th until 8 pm; Saturday, May 21st from Noon to 8 pm; and Sunday, May 22nd from Noon to 5 pm.

T-shirts... Everybody's wearing them and everybody's designing them. Half-baked t-shirt companies pop up with the frequency and exasperation of mosquitoes, but we know there's still a great amount of talented artists and designers creating shirt graphics out there. We've hand-picked a group of artists to create their own exclusive, limited runs of graphic t-shirts, reinterpreting what a line of shirts can truly be and paying tribute to the 50 year-old tradition of the t-shirts as an art medium. From screen-printed to hand-painted to cut-and-shredded, the entire CO space will be filled with a wide variety of creatively-altered t-shirts.
CONFIRMED ARTISTS:
Josh Clancy & Travis Stearns as "YAMAHAHA", Michael Gaughan, Carly Schoen, Anne Ulku, Jodi Milbert, Joseph Belk, Mike Davis, Kyle Meyer, Wes Winship, Peter Bekke, Booka B, Ben LaFond, Birk Grudem & Tom Amel of Overproof, Edward Quinn, Robert Kaiser, Chank Diesel, and more.

Permalesque is our first annual staff show at CO that features work from both companies that run the gallery, Burlesque of N.A. and Permanent Art and Design Group. For this first attempt, we tried to pull a theme out of the name—what could Permalesque (a combination of Burlesque and Permanent) mean? The result was an intuitive, but vague, idea about the constant chatter of contemporary marketing schemes and their overwhelming army of mediums. So we set about building an exhibit that would describe and express this idea in many forms. Two things which stand out immediately was the reliance on different lighting and video techniques, as well as the consistent appearance of vertiginous patterns and geometric designs. Especially on the collaborative wall designed by both companies, but also with the window projections. To compliment the multimedia spectacle, Marijuana DeathSquads’ Issac Gale and Ryan Olson, played a set of electronic music that used repetition to clash different patterns of melody together and added another element to the ascending spiral of bewilderment we were trying to create with Permalesque.

Aaron Draplin returned to Minneapolis, the city of his alma mater, to pay homage to his formative years there, and also to show the locals what he’s been up to for the last decade since moving west. For the show, CO Exhibitions took Aaron’s comprehensive retrospective poster Pretty Much Everything Up To May 27th, 2009 and put most of it onto a 20x30 wall.
For the show Draplin designed a Minnesota state poster (buy it here!), helped produce a CO edition of Field Notes, exhibited early journals, designs and process ephemera, and released an audio tour of the space with the help of a QR code.
Aaron Draplin was born in Detroit in 1973. He began his career with a snowboard graphic for Solid snowboards and worked on everything from lettering cafe signs to drawing up logos to thinking up local advertising campaigns, all while forming Draplindustries Design Co. He finished his design degree at MCAD and in April 2000 he accepted an art director position with SNOWBOARDER magazine. He worked on 23 issues of the magazine and received the award for “Art Director of the Year” from Primedia. In April 2002, he moved on to Cinco Design Office of Portland, as a Senior Designer where he worked on the Gravis, Helly Hansen and Nixon accounts. He stepped back out on his own in 2004 with Draplin Design Co, and has since then worked with Coal Headwear, the Union Binding Company, Snowboard Magazine, Field Notes memo books, Ride Snowboards, Forum Snowboards, Grenade Gloves, Chunklet Magazine, Cobra Dogs, Absinthe Films, NemoDesign, Gnu Snowboards, RVL7 Apparel, Burton Snowboards, K2 Snowboards, Bonfire Snowboarding Apparel, South American Snow Sessions, as well as all sorts of one-off logos and t-shirt graphics.

Curated by artist Michael Gaughan, Smell the Glove took its subject from a scene in the celebrated faux band documentary This Is Spinal Tap. Band members describe a risque image of a nude and greased woman on all fours smelling the gloved hand of a man holding her on a leash as the image of their next album cover, but are censored by executives. This proposed album cover which never sees the light of day in the movie was what Gaughan made the starting place for the show. Artists submitting work were encouraged to take the phrase, the scene, anything that could be extrapolated from the subject and turn it into whatever felt right, whatever smelling the glove meant to them. Art was submitted from all over the states and from the UK, with artist’s ages ranging from 18 to 55. The opening was accompanied by a Spinal Tap cover band and the closing was a movie night where Spinal Tap was projected on the big screen.
Michael Gaughan is best known for his paintings, drawings and performances, while also working in many other mediums. He received his BFA in painting in 2002 from MCAD and his MA in Arts Education in 2004 from the University of Minnesota. He has received the Jerome emerging artists grant, and been shown in 11 group and solo shows in the last eight years, in Minneapolis, MN and Portland, OR. As a Musician he has been recognized as Best Live Artist by City Pages in 2005 for his work in Brother and Sister, and one of the top ten Best Musical Live Act’s by the Star Tribune as ICE-ROD in 2003.

Wings and Teeth was a retrospective of all the visual media that has swirled around record label Doomtree’s rise to prominence, and also an introduction to members’ solo artwork. From notebooks to photocopied show flyers, polaroid snapshots to stage props, all of their archived ephemera filled up the space and each member was given a wall to show work of their own. It was a huge multimedia spectacle; fans and attendees felt like they were walking into a very clean and brightly lit attic, where all the history of Doomtree could be flipped through and ruminated upon.
Doomtree is a record label and rap crew from Minneapolis, MN. For the past five or so years the collective has grown to include more than a dozen core members and has risen to nationwide prominence. As a record label Doomtree began by putting out short runs of home-burned EP’s called False Hopes, and now releases the solo work of members: Dessa, Cecil Otter and P.O.S among many others. Their first official release, Ipecac Neat by rapper P.O.S. was recognized by the Star Tribune as the Best Local Album of the Year in 2004. Doomtree has been nominated for five Minnesota Music Awards (MMA) and is consistently selected as Hip Hop Artist of the Year by local press.

CO is a large scale exhibit space located in Northeast Minneapolis, owned and operated by Burlesque of North America and Permanent Art & Design Group. CO presents thematic multimedia exhibitions in collaboration with artists, designers, and curators. The space includes over 2000 sq. feet, 20+ ft. high walls, mobile walls, and suspendible ceilings. Other resources for exhibitions include screenprinting facilities, artist residencies, and media outreach campaigns.
The name CO was decided with our principles in mind. As a prefix, CO- modifies base words to mean together with or associated with. We approach projects in the same fashion—for each artist, designer, or curator who works with us, we are a resource for development, fabrication, and talent, a dedicated partner in executing their vision. For us, the excitement is in expanding exhibitions so they transform the gallery into an ambitious multimedia spectacle.
For short term rentals (Photo shoots/Events/Shows) let us know what you see happening at CO.
